The DonorAtlas database is built by combining proprietary data with AI research from the entire public internet to compile the most accurate and complete dossiers available. This AI research process runs on-demand when you need it, and it's already been done on millions of donors in the US. Sometimes, you may come across donors who don't yet have AI research completed, or perhaps you want to refresh a profile with new AI research. This article describes how to do that, and what is going on in the background!
If you take away one thing from this article: enhance before you read. When you see the Enhance button, click it and come back to the profile in a minute or two when it's completed. The information will be more accurate and complete!
As of July 2026, some of these processes (enhancements, refreshes, etc) may happen automatically when you view a profile, so you don't have to click at all!
On profiles that don't yet have AI research completed, you'll see a blue bar with the button:
Click the button and DonorAtlas researches the person in depth — searching the web, reading what it finds, confirming it has the right person, and writing a profile with citations. You can watch each step as the progress bar fills:
You don't have to wait on this page: the job also appears in the jobs popup in the bottom-right corner, so you can keep working and come back when it's done. And enhancing is unlimited on your plan — it never uses your imports — so use it for every important prospect!
Enhancing builds a profile that wasn't there; refreshing keeps one current. People change jobs, make new gifts, and show up in the news. The button in the header of the About card re-researches the donor and posts a short summary of what changed. Use it when you want a profile updated:
A donor's wealth picture — net worth, income, assets — is researched separately from the rest of the profile. If an enhanced profile's wealth section is empty, click the button in the Wealth card's header to go find the data. This process may take a few minutes as it pulls in incredibly detailed wealth information and modeling.
